It’s Oud en Nieuw!

It’s Oud en Nieuw (New Years Eve) in the Netherlands. Perfect timing for a seasonal Dutch phrase of the week, this time all about Oud en Nieuw, and more importantly, the local tradities.

Everything you need to know.

The things I do for my readers!

Nieuwjaar op z’n Nederlands!

As I write this piece, sat at a table in my favorite cafe, Coffee and Antelopes, the year is drawing to an impatient and unstoppable end, flying over zebra crossings and through red lights as if it’s an Amsterdam cyclist.

On Oud en Nieuw, Dutch women for once leave the denim, the shapeless clothes, and their dangerously flat shoes at home. Like the tough warrior women that they are, they brave the cold, which is more vicious than an Amsterdam waitress being asked when the coffee that was ordered 20 minutes ago will arrive. Dutch girls hop on their bikes in cocktail dresses with pumps*! (*De pijn en kou worden enigszins verzacht door de grote hoeveelheden alcohol) and weave dangerously from left to right, causing car drivers to slam on the brakes, what joy!

Oud en Nieuw is so special for the Dutch, that it’s actually the only day of the year when they’ll rebel against the Calvinistic doctrine of ‘doe maar normaal’, and dress up to celebrate the end of the holiday season.  The Dutch on Oud en Nieuw are a different animal from the rest of the year (with the exception of Kings Day) so here are some tips on New Years etiquette in het Nederlands.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar

It’s particularly important to say ‘Gelukkig Nieuwjaar’ at midnight. If you must wish someone a happy New Year prior to midnight, for example, when you’re sucking up to your Dutch partners parents, then say ‘alvast gelukkig Nieuwjaar’. They’ll still think you’re an eikel, but at least you’ll show some understanding of Dutch ‘tradities’.

‘Een prettig uitende’ according to my Dutch teacher at Koentact, is something used mainly amongst people over the age of fifty. I agree with her that it does sound as if you’re wishing someone happy bowel movements, which considering the amount of deep fried snacks eaten by the locals on New Years Eve, might actually be the right thing to say.

‘De beste wensen’ is one of those things that we domme expats are always getting wrong. The Dutch have strict rules about its use, and will drag you kicking and screaming to Schiphol (or a steamship) if you get it wrong.

At 23.59 pm it’s absolutely not done to say ‘De beste wensen’. Nothing screams ‘unintegrated bloody foreigner, they are lucky that we are so tolerant’ than using this at the wrong time. From January 1st you can use this all you like. It has many sarcastic uses. If you receive the usual substandard service in an Amsterdam brown cafe, you can wish the waiting staff ‘de beste wensen’ with a huge smile on your face, and leave them not a cent as a tip. If some rude moron almost runs you over on the pavement with a bike, yell after them ‘de beste wensen’ hopefully they’ll be so confused that they’ll look back at you and crash into a fire hydrant.  Allow your creativity to run wild.

Wat eten/drinken ze?

Eten:

The Shallow Man loves Masterchef. Not the over the top Australian version where the contestants appear to have been sniffing some of that white heroin readily available on the streets of Amsterdam. The Aussie contestants are always shouting “woooooooo” or “wohooooo” at every task assigned by the Judges. I naturally prefer the original BBC version, where people are calm and collected, and not in the habit of cheering and hollering like the audience of a live sex show.

I forgot what I was saying, oh yes, Oliebollen en Appelflappen. If you live in Amsterdam, then I have bad news for you, not a single Amsterdamse oliebollen bakker made it into the top 10 list for best oliebollen in the Netherlands, shameful! The Amsterdam variety of Oliebollen is famous for the foul stench of saturated fat that can be smelled from 500 meters away.

It does however have some practical uses:

  1. Stomach lining for the huge amounts of alcohol that will be consumed on Oud en Nieuw
  2. Pest control, simply stuff Oliebollen in different corners of your Amsterdam apartment and watch the mice eventually die of high blood pressure and cholesterol
  3. Foreplay, nothing gets the Dutch in the mood for some bedroom maneuvers more than the sweet smell of saturated fat. Make sure that you completely cover the oliebollen in powdered sugar, and leave some of it visible around your mouth, they’ll be fighting each other to kiss you

Champagne, is drunk in copious volumes here, having said that, most financially astute Dutch folks prefer to drink prosecco. It’s nice and cheap, and regardless of what you drink, you’ll have a hangover the next day anyway.

Wat doen ze?

Oudjaarsavond:

It’s Oud en Nieuw, Zoenen!

Yes, the Dutch like to countdown till it’s midnight, unscrew the lid of the finest Albanian Champagne, and then, the moment all red-blooded expats have been waiting for, grab the New Years kiss. Now of course usually, the rather distant and cold Dutch will go for three kisses on the cheek, but on Oud en Nieuw, the combination of the smell of Oliebollen, the sexy vision of all that powdered sugar plastered all over your face, and of course the pre-glasnost imported nep Champagne, will have them hotter than a group of Dutch women at the huishoudsbeurs. Give your tongue a workout, it’s Oud en Nieuw!

HEEL VEEL vuurwerk afsteken

Fireworks and primitive man

I still find it incredible the Dutch obsession with fireworks around Oud en Nieuw. This year a new law came into effect in the Netherlands restricting the times that fireworks can be set off from 18:00 on the 31st to 02.00 on New Years Day. The Dutch, having such a huge respect for laws that they don’t agree with (smoking in bars, road laws etc) have of course ignored this, and for the past few days, I’ve been hearing the sweet sound of explosives being detonated all over Amsterdam. Many Dutch people import illegal fireworks into the country, which then contribute to the annual toll of fingers blown off, eyes damaged, cars set on fire etc. As I write this, it’s now midday on the 31st, and a number of serious firework-related injuries have already been reported.

Following a night of drunken debauchery, you might wake up and find yourself being fed bits of olibollen or appleflap by a complete stranger. Make sure that you’ve recorded the oudejaarsconference in case a Dutch person ends up staying the night with you.

Nieuwjaarsduik

Unox, the producer of high quality ready-made meals sponsor the annual Nieuwjaarsduik. This takes place at a different location every year, and involves hordes of hungover locals running into the sea in their swimming trunks and bikinis.  This year it will be at Egmond Aan Zee, the kind of place that will be grateful to have visitors, as normally people only escape from there, so it will be good for them to have new visitors other than lost and confused tourists.

The Shallow Man would like to thank the folks at Koentact, for their continued ‘tolerantie’ of my destruction of the Dutch language, and of course, I’d like to wish you all een Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

Ladies, take it easy with the booze, please don’t end up like this.
